My Little Houdini

It was only a matter of time before Madeline figured out how to wiggle out of her clothes. When Madeline masters a new skill it is usually cause for celebration, however Madeline did not just stop with her clothes. Once her clothes were removed she would then proceed to take off her diaper. The first time I walked into her room and saw her standing in her crib naked I had to chuckle because naked babies are pretty darn cute, and since she hadn’t had any accidents no harm done.

Well, this turned into an almost daily occurrence and was a great interference to her naps. She would spend her whole nap-time trying to unbutton, unzip, and wiggle out of her PJ’s, then she would have to unsnap her onsie, and finally rip off the diaper. Eventually she became pretty efficient at it and would have it done in no time. Then she would fall asleep and sometimes go potty in her sleep after which Mommy would be left with the fun task of cleaning out the crib.

All of this came to a head when we were on a little family trip. We had spent all morning and afternoon at the indoor waterpark so we were hoping for a good nap out of Madeline.  We sat in our hotel room (we had two adjoining rooms) and listened to Madeline playing and talking in her Pack N Play. We finally gave up after a couple of hours and as I opened the door into the adjoining room the aroma of poop hit me like a brick wall. I took one look at my naked baby in her crib and knew immediately that we were in for trouble!

So, we immediately pulled out the camcorder and camera so that we could document the horror of the situation. I’ll try to spare you the gory details, but let’s just say Madeline had been playing in her poo for the past couple of hours and it was everywhere! There was poop all over the Pack N Play as well as between her toes, and all over her body. So Madeline got a good bath from her Daddy and I did my best to clean out the Pack N Play. It was at this point that we realized we needed a plan.

We thought of a few options like cutting the feet off of her sleepers and putting them on backwards, but I didn’t want to destroy all of her sleepers. I tried to think of a way to keep her zipper from being pulled down, but couldn’t think of a safe way to accomplish that. Finally I figured it out! We have been putting Madeline’s sleepers on inside out so that the zipper is hidden on the inside for the past couple of weeks and our problem has been solved. At first I thought she would be really frustrated trying to get it off, but it has worked wonderfully. Her sleepers stay on, I don’t have to clean up potty and poop after her naps, and my child is once again napping. So, I highly recommend the method. It has worked like a charm!

P.S. – The picture above was taken right before her nap. How could such a precious little face make such a mess!

  • Your blog is WAY cooler than mine! I don’t have a single story about poo.

Very funny! Its about time you shared this story with the masses! Very creative solution, though.

    Peace.

  • Great tip, I would never have thought of that. Also, from personal experience, a piece of duct tape across the tabs of the diaper works pretty well too! (Makes it a little more challenging for Mom/Dad to get the diaper off, but it’s definitely worth it.)

  • My sister-in-law did this when she was a baby, and it was actually around her mouth—ewwwwwww
