A current picture

I had my brother take a picture of us last night, so I thought I would share it here. We don’t have a lot of “family” pictures. Most of them are of Madeline by herself, and then we have a handful of them with David or me individually so it was kind of a big deal to finally update our photo album!

I wanted Steven to take the picture because I needed a picture to send to a little girl that we are sponsoring through Compassion. Her name is Milenka and she is from Peru. She is 4 years old and she has the same birthday as Madeline, which is how we selected her.

I had always wanted to sponsor a child, and now that Madeline is old enough to “get” stuff I thought it would be fun to pick a little girl who is close to her age that shares her birthday (to make it a little extra special). That way we can hopefully keep sponsoring her over the years and Madeline will be able to grow up getting to know her and she can do the same.

One thing that Compassion really promotes is letter writing between sponsors and the children they sponsor. After doing some research on the Compassion website it really hit home with me, because these kids really value every piece of correspondence their sponsors send them. I read a story on their blog about 1 child who lived in a village that needed to be evacuated because of an impending flood. The little girl was crying and freaking out because she wanted to go back into her house even though she was in the process of evacuating. Finally the Compassion worker told her she could go back in and she came back out with a package full of all of the cards, pictures, and letters that her sponsor had sent her. She had saved every one of them and they were the one thing that she treasured enough to make sure she was able to bring with her. That story totally choked me up, and I decided that we needed to do a good job of sending pictures and letters to our little girl.

So, I had Steven take the picture and now we can get it in the mail to her today. If you’ve never considered it I highly recommend you look into sponsoring a child through Compassion. They are a great organization, and the work they do is wonderful!
