The Joys of Teething

Anthony was kind of cranky today. He didn’t want to take his bottle, and he kept frantically shoving his fist in his mouth while simultaneously shrieking in what appeared to be pain. So, I thought maybe he was teething. He already has his 2 bottom teeth (which is about 3 months earlier than Madeline!), so I’m thinking he must be working on some more. I was at the grocery store today walking through the baby aisle and decided to try some teething biscuits for Anthony. He is so eager to eat our food, but most of the time when he gets it in his mouth he chokes on it a little, or gags himself so I thought the biscuits would be good because they would allow him to eat something solid without having to worry about him choking. For those of you unfamiliar with teething biscuits, they are basically big cookie-like things that are really hard so that babies can gnaw on them without breaking off chunks. Basically they just dissolve in their mouths…kind of similar to a dog gnawing on a rawhide bone. Nice analogy, huh?

Anthony loved his biscuit. He chewed on that thing for a solid half an hour, at which point I started to panic when I realized I would have to take it away from him to put him down for his nap, which he was very overdue for (although he didn’t mind since he was so pleased with his biscuit). Anthony freaks out if you take something away from him that he is enjoying. Lots of high-pitched shrieking/screaming. Not pleasant!

So, I got his bottle ready while he sat on the floor in his car seat eating his biscuit. All of a sudden Lucy came running by me, kind of making a hacking/choking sound. I walked over to Anthony and noticed his biscuit was gone. Apparently Lucy took it upon herself to assist me with my biscuit-snatching dilemma! She choked that thing down, and Anthony didn’t seem to mind too much. He is going to quickly learn not to keep anything at Lucy level if he is hoping to eat it (although this particular incident wasn’t his fault since he was strapped into a seat on the floor!). I also think Lucy is getting excited to have a baby who is eating solid food that she can snatch out of their unsuspecting hands.

I had forgotten how messy teething biscuits are. That stuff was stuck to his face and hands like glue!

  • Too cute! And, good Lucy for perceiving your desire to rid him of the biscuit for naptime. She is such a good dog :)

  • That is too funny! And I agree that those biscuits are ridiculously messy…I dread handing them out just because of the mess that ensues. Luckily, Lindson likes to eat them like cookies now so that isn’t so bad :)

  • teething biscuits… I’ll have to remember those!

  • Madeline has decided she wants to eat them too. They literally remind me of dog biscuits, and she doesn’t even like chocolate chip cookies so she is obviously only eating them because Anthony eats them.

Sara- Definitely remember the teething biscuits. Babies love them! Just be prepared for the mess that ensues. You will have to scrub your baby afterwards, which generally makes them pretty peeved off. So basically you get a decent amount of happy time, followed by a screaming fit while you try to clean them off :)
